Enter your result below. The calculator uses the Léger 1988 formula — the same one used by sports scientists and fitness professionals worldwide — to estimate your VO2 max. It then compares your score against published norms for your age group and gender and gives you a fitness rating.

You need four things: the level you reached, the number of shuttles you completed at that level, your age and your gender. That's it.

How the Score Is Calculated

The calculator uses the formula developed by Luc Léger and colleagues in 1988, published in the Journal of Sports Science. It is the most widely validated formula for converting beep test results into a VO2 max estimate.

The formula takes the running speed at your final completed level as its main input. Speed at each level is calculated as 8 plus 0.5 multiplied by the level number, in kilometres per hour. So level 10 corresponds to a speed of 13 km/h.

For adults, the formula keeps age constant at 18, as the original research found the relationship between speed and VO2 max remains consistent for adults beyond this point. For younger participants, actual age is used.

VO2 max estimates from the beep test are exactly that — estimates. They correlate well with laboratory measurements but individual factors like running economy and familiarity with the test format will affect the result.
