Always verify requirements directly with the force you are applying to. Standards change between recruitment rounds and may vary by constabulary.

The beep test is the standard cardiovascular fitness assessment for police forces across England and Wales. The required level depends on the role and the force.

Standard Officer Requirement

The standard requirement for police officers across most constabularies in England and Wales is level 5.4. This applies to both initial recruitment and annual fitness assessments for serving officers.

Level 5.4 means reaching level 5 and completing at least 4 shuttles at that level. It corresponds to a running speed of approximately 10.5 km/h. For most reasonably active adults, this is achievable with 4 to 6 weeks of targeted preparation.

Standard Officer

5.4

Most constabularies in England and Wales. Annual re-test for serving officers.

West Yorkshire (serving officers)

3.7

Reduced from 5.4 as of April 2024. New recruits in year 1 still require 5.4.

Public Order Officers

6.3

Required for public order trained roles. Higher due to sustained exertion demands.

Firearms Officers (AFO)

9.4
Good–Very Good

Armed response officers. Requires structured 10–12 week training programme.

Specialist Firearms (SFO)

10.5
Very Good–Excellent

Highest police standard. Equivalent to elite fitness for most age groups.

What Changed in 2024

West Yorkshire Police reduced their standard requirement for serving officers from 5.4 to 3.7 in April 2024. This was a notable and controversial change. Officers in specialist roles within West Yorkshire continue to meet the higher specialist standards.

No other major constabulary had followed suit at the time of writing. The 5.4 standard remains the norm across England and Wales.

Police Scotland and PSNI

Police Scotland uses a different fitness assessment format and its own standards. Do not assume the England and Wales figures apply to Scottish police recruitment. Contact Police Scotland directly or check their published recruitment guidance.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) uses a different fitness assessment entirely. If you are applying to PSNI, check their specific requirements before beginning preparation.

How to Prepare

For the standard 5.4 requirement: 4 to 6 weeks of beep test specific training from a baseline of general fitness should be sufficient. Use the first three weeks of the training guide on this site. Focus on pacing and turn technique as well as fitness — both affect your score significantly.

For the 9.4 (firearms) standard: allow 10 to 12 weeks minimum from a solid aerobic base. The interval sessions in weeks 3 to 6 of the training guide are the core of your preparation. Train at and above your current maximum level.

For the 10.5 (SFO) standard: this requires sustained training over several months. Use the 6 week plan as a base and repeat with progressive targets. Most candidates preparing for SFO selection train specifically for this assessment for 3 to 6 months.
